Geeking Off 145: Star Wars Episode I Commentary

Anticipating the release of Episode VII, we're gonna try to pack in a commentary of each Star Wars movie before then. Should we have started with Episode IV? Probably, but this is our big chance to watch 'em in this order.

Geeking Off 144: Oscar Predictions 2015

Special treat this time. Long-time aggravated listener Stephanie joins us for a little Oscar preview. She as well as Jon, Scott and Chad discuss predictions as well as how confident we are in our predictions. This is all part of our Oscar prediction game we play every year that usually Stephanie or Scott wins. Listen now before the big night this Sunday. Please tell us your Oscar score.

I think the rules we follow for Oscar scoring were developed by movie critic Jeff Bayer. Here are the instructions from Bayer's thescorecardreview.com website:

How to play
Pick your winners in all 24 categories. Then, give each winner a confidence score. Your most confident pick gets 24 points, second most confident gets 23 points, third most confident gets 22 points, and eventually your least confident pick gets 1 point.
This is perfect for Oscar parties, because the lead keeps changing. The winner is the one with the most points at the end. A perfect score is 300. If there is a tie (there never is a tie), then the winner is the one with the most points in these three categories combined (Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress).
You’ll eventually be able to say things like … “Once, in 2015, I got a 297 Oscar score.” Or, “I know a guy who once hit 300 back in 2016.” Yeah, you’ll be saying these things. Trust me.

Geeking Off 143: 2014 (the best)

I'm gonna make this summary short because the podcast itself is quite long. Zo, Scott and Chad each go through their top ten movies of 2014 with Jon around to correct their opinions (mostly Wes Anderson-related) from his own movie database 2014 list.  On a positive note, 2014 may have been a pretty great year considering this best-of session was way longer than our worst-of session.

Geeking Off 142: 2014 (the worst)

We tease a little at the beginning about how we're gonna talk about the best movies of 2014, but this one is strictly talking bad ones and disappointments. Maybe 2014 was a good year since the conversation actually clocked in at less than an hour. Still, lots of whining.

Geeking Off 141: Suicide Star Wars Squad VII

The gang's all back. Chad too.

We resume a little from last time and talk a bit about the Star Wars teaser and Suicide Squad casting. Remember we taped this a bit ago. Listen and reminisce. There's some timeless stuff thrown in there too.

Also check out some of these links we talked about.

George Lucas version of the teaser.

Colbert light saber thing.

Saturday Night Live Star Wars Teaser.

Empire Uncut.

Btw, if you're looking at your iPhone right now, there may be at least two typos in the episode title. Try not to think about it.

Geeking Off 140: Other Peoples' Year End Lists, Intersteller Breakdown

(This may be recorded slightly quieter than usual -- turn your volume knob if necessary)

Open forum time! We mostly chatted about what other people talked about what with movies and 2014 and all that.

We dwelled on Intersteller and science and gravity and love during the second half of this recording.

Blast from the past! Our old buddy Chad from the early days of Geeking Off flew in from Hawaii and joined us about halfway through.

This is Edgar Wright's year end list that we referenced throughout the podcast.

This is the video list that we made minor mention of, but never returned to. (watch it! amazing.)

This is probably the Tilda Swinton/Amy Schumer thing that Zo was talking about.

This is that thing from Futurama's Scary Door.

This is that Science Friday thing with Christopher Nolan and Kip Thorne.

This is Kepler 22b.

Geeking Off 139: Welcome ta Urf!

How about another LOST episode? This one was recorded waaaay back in August I think. The file was meticulously extracted off of my broken laptop and it's here for you to enjoy and curate into your own collection.

What's this one about? It's a lot of girth continuing our sci-fi talk. This time we each do a sci-fi top five of a different sci-fi sub-genre. We foolishly assumed this would only take an hour. It took two. Obviously we get hung up on lots of movies that didn't make the lists.
