Geeking Off 115: Star Warsing

Yeah, we're a month late to the party. Not gonna bother saying much, but here's a picture we like:

Yeah, we're talkin' Star Wars for the first time. Mostly the future of it. Mostly just yelling names.

  1. The only characters that should be allowed to crossover to the new movie are, Yoda, R2 & 3PO, and the cool Storm Troopers. (Frank Oz and Anthony Daniels should get busy recording every word so that they can be dubbed if needed)

Star Wars was revolutionary in 1977, that's why we all have so many very fond memories. There was nothing really revolutionary in the new movies. The Last Starfighter pioneered CG animation, and movies like The Abyss and Terminator 2 moved graphics along. So by the time of The Phantom Menace, we have seen all the "tricks" before. That might be why stupid kids today don't really have an affinity to Star Wars like we have.

Models do make good movies. Isn't that why The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises are so good?

Perhaps the best thing for the new movies would be to follow the example of JJ Abrams and totally reboot the franchise.

    Anyhow, great discussion.

  2. I agree with Scott and Mark L. its going to be pretty difficult to make the transition from Return to whatever is next but I do like the idea of Han being killed off and the story taking off from there. Maybe Jabba the Hut's son takes revenge. Is Boba Fett dead? maybe he kills him off. Maybe that sand pit hole monster from Return is pissed cause it didnt get to eat Han so it becomes a Sith and finally gets to eat Han. just some ideas ive been throwing around.
really though i think that in a few of the novels the Sith Council was discussed a little more than what we see in the movies. the dark council is shown a few times i believe but we really dont get to see how it works like we do with the jedi council. i understand that this had to be the case since the story is based around the fall of Anakin and that his being upset wit hthe council along with his love for Portman pushed him to defend the Emperor against Samuel L Windu but it would be interesting if there was some internal conflict with in the Sith population and their council. there was a split i believe that in some of the expanded universe there was story line that goes into this and it really sounds good. this plot would make the movie a very dark one as well. now that im thinking about it i think that this all took place on a time line before the 6 movies we know about. this might be interesting, especially if, to go along with Episode 0 and Episode 7 was made.
As for director, i really think that Sylvester Stallone would knock it out of the park. of course im kidding. I am not kidding when i say that Nolan would do a great job. who do you know that didnt like the last 3 Batmans? No one. They were dark but not violent and evil. You could take your kid to them if you had a kid. and it was a franchise. and im sure that disney wont just stop at one more film.

  3. Great podcast gentlemen. I haven’t been able to comment on the “Skyfall” cast yet, but I hope to soon (stupid kids get in the way of so many good movies…) Instead, I got to view that movie-that-could-have-been-great, “Wreck-it Ralph”. Not a bad movie by any means, but I was hoping for a lot more video game crossovers. There were a few, but not nearly enough.

First of all, I think you all have now invented a new derogatory term by accident. From now on, when there is a moron that is next to completely useless, I will call that person a “bagger”. Every time you guys kept saying “that bagger” (in reference to the idiot that likes Jar-Jar Binks), I almost peed just a little.

On a related note, my son who is six was just introduced to the Star Wars phenomenon in the past year. He HATES Jar-Jar Binks. In fact, for Christmas, he has asked for several Lego sets. Many of them include the Monster Hunters collection and DC Superheroes collection. He said he wouldn’t mind getting some from the Star Wars sets, but he was very adamant that he does NOT want anything with Jar-Jar. While my son still leaves something to be desired while playing on his soccer team, there is still hope for him yet.

I am also in the camp that believes they ought to get as many of the original actors as possible. I think it will definitely help keep the continuity that it is indeed the same series (not just the same universe, as the clone wars have done). I just read an article today interviewing Samuel L. Jackson, and his interest in returning to the new trilogy, since they never actually showed him dying. He suggested turning up without an arm, which we know has been done before. The problem with this is the timeline. Unless Mace Windu is not human, but some other race that lives much longer (or infinite) lives (perhaps an elvish-crossover to LOTR…?), then this whole idea just won’t work. Plus, SLJ is kind of a tool in real life, so I can do without his purple light saber in the next set.

I think JJ Abrams would also be fantastic, but of course there is his involvement with Star Trek. It’s not going to happen.
Jon Favreau would do a phenomenal job I think. I thought Cowboys and Aliens was a great premise, just poorly executed. Ironman was great, so I think he has it in him when others provide the stories based on proven material.

Here’s a director you should also consider that I don’t remember being mentioned… How about this for a dark horse; Robert Zemeckis. Think about it…. The director of Back to the Future which also had ground-breaking special effects. He also brought a ton of emotional depth to movies like Forrest Gump, Cast Away, and The Polor Express (wait a minute…. Maybe I should be stumping for Tom Hanks to join the new SW trilogy…)
