Geeking Off 117: Holiday Movie Spectacular

Here are the rules of the Holiday Movie Spectacular:

Each of us take turns going over our top 5 Christmas (or Thanksgiving apparently) movies starting at number 5. If one of us says a movie that's on someone else's list, the guy who hasn't listed that movie has to pick a new movie for that corresponding spot. The result is a scientific collection of the 20 greatest Christmas movies ever made. Turns out most of them have lots of violence.

Also, apparently Kobe beef is so good it's worth getting violent over.

Geeking Off 116: Ketchup

Alrighty. We were gonna talk about holiday movies, but Scotty was late so we started talking about just some flicks we've been watching lately. We spent an absurd amount of time on Safety Not Guaranteed. We obscured some of the audio of a spoilery nature. We all liked the flick so maybe you should watch it yourself before trying to figure what we said about the ending of it.

If you saw it, how was the ending for you?

So we also talked a little about some of these:

Seven Psychopaths
Flight
Silver Linings Playbook
Your Sister's Sister
24 Hour Party People
American Scream
30 for 30
Trek Nation
Dark Knight Returns
End of Watch
Pitch Perfect
The Bay
Searching for Sugar Man
Queen of Versailles
Anna Kerenina
Argo
Lincoln

Not a comprehensive list, btw. There are others.

Oh, and not to worry. The Christmas movie list is DEFINITELY the next one posted.

Geeking Off 115: Star Warsing

Yeah, we're a month late to the party. Not gonna bother saying much, but here's a picture we like:

Yeah, we're talkin' Star Wars for the first time. Mostly the future of it. Mostly just yelling names.

Geeking Off 114: Skyfalling

By now everyone's seen Skyfall, so spoilers are welcome and used. In the meantime, the critics are pretty stoked about the film.  Best Bond in years they say. Do you agree? Do we agree? And what does that have to do with Jonny Lee Miller in Hackers?

Geeking Off 113: Scary Moments

Alrighty then. It's October. It's time to speak scary. This year we focused not so much on movies, but on moments. Yes, that means Pee Wee makes the list. It's justified.

Geeking Off 112: Adam's Song

Just so everybody knows, this particular podcast cost about $200.00 to produce (a result of hardware failure). You better enjoy this. If you can.

We spent the whole time going over listener comments... which are pretty much from one guy. Hey everyone else out there, consider what we talk about relevant to you a little anyway.

Oh, and also, download it here!

Here is a link to that Empire filmumentary thing I mentioned:

Geeking Off 111: The Sequel Sequel

This is the sequel to our previous discussion on sequels... part 2.

Now we abandon the Grantland article in favor of our own movies we need to talk about as well as going into further detail on our own sequel philosophies.

Are you prepared for part 3 of this conversation? Too bad. It stops now.

Download here!

Btw, I adjusted the comment settings on the blog, so see if it works now. Start with a one-word comment just to make sure.

Geeking Off 110: The Sequel

The sequel topic was based on a Grantland article that we really ought to provide a link to. Well, whatever. It's likely Googleable. Plus, we pretty much went through the article pretty thoroughly in my opinion. Best sequel ever? I think we can all agree most likely (hint: don't be a girl and say "the one with the ewoks").

Sequels!

Geeking Off 109: R.I.P. Tony Scott

Just so ya'll know, we're not that behind the times. We recorded the Tony Scott tribute just a couple of days after the death.

Tony, if you listen or if you're reading this. I'm sorry. We were sometimes offensive and sometimes mean, but I think you came out on top of this one.

We go over every Tony Scott film. Were we right in the opinions? Yes. Yes we were. That question was rhetorical.

Geeking Off 108: Gangster (Crime) Movies

We rambled on the best crime movies over various decades. Hold steady on this. We mostly debated how strictly we should classify movies into specific genres more than we debated the movies themselves. That, and Scarface isn't really that great.

Geeking Off 107: Streaming Favorites

There were five of us again, so that's why it's a little distant and echoey. Of course, not all of us are right at the same time, so it evens out. The conversation this time around: simply some recent favorite Netflix streaming selections.

So yeah, we probably left off a few faves. Why don't you tell us what those are?

Also, I somehow said "Richard Grieco" sax solo from St. Elmo's Fire. OBVIOUSLY it was the "Rob Lowe" sax solo.

Anyway, you're in for a treat on this one, because I tacked on the 15-minute outtake of us rapping a little about the recent Sight and Sound results (where Vertigo is now considered the best movie ever).

Geeking Off 106: Jon's Vegas Star Trek Adventure

Here's your firsthand chance to discover the intricacies that is a genuine Star Trek convention. Jon went to one. The not-quite-as-geeky panel on this issue had several hard probing questions. Stories! Laughter!

Btw, maybe you've already heard it, but Jon gave a similar report here: http://www.jrwatchesstartrek.blogspot.com/2012/08/podcast-107-ziyals-well-that-ends-well.html

Geeking Off 105: Introducing the Imdb Trivia Game

Alright, so while we were waiting for Steele to come over, Zo and I invented a new game. Here's how you play. Someone finds a movie on Imdb and starts reading trivia to that movie to the other person who sees how few clues it takes to figure out what movie it is and then we trade off back and forth. Also, you can't just pick random movies. Each movie you pick has to be one click away from the previous movie.

Listen, and play along!

Geeking Off 104: EW's Cult TV Shows

You learn something when you go over a list of supposedly cult TV shows. You learn that any show can be considered a cult show. Some people have just got to love it a lot (and some people have to hate it). Maybe a list of cult shows is just another name for a list of shows. We lose Jeremy, but gain the Nasher in this discussion.

Geeking Off 103: Favorite Movies of 2012 (so far)

So like, these probably aren't the best movies of the year -- just our favorites. Our lists were created before any of us saw The Watch. Keep that in mind. Actually that has nothing to do with anything.

The Avengers

Alright, so our fights regarding The Avengers were much heavier several months ago, but here are the residuals.

It's a pretty good movie, which is really the worst thing you can say about a movie.

Total Recall Commentary

Alright. Jon, Scott and Zo got together and watched Total Recall and mostly commented about that guy who got his arms ripped off and also about the merits of Sharon Stone.

Grab a copy of the Arnold classic and let us do the talking.

The Dark Knight Rises

It's been a year, but we're back with a vengeance and new microphones!

Sorry for the delay. Tell both of your friends to download this stuff.

Surely you've seen The Dark Knight Rises. Surely you feel the exact same way we do. It was awesome, so we ripped it apart slightly.
